I have noticed that Angela and Bentley have this stripe down their backs so I asked mum what they were. She said that I had also had the same stripe down my back. She showed me a picture of myself so I could see. Boy am I handsome. No wonder Angela wants to be my girl. Mum often calls me the ‘cool looking dude’ and now I can see why. And yes I too have the same stripe.

I asked mum why we have this stripe so she sat down with Angela, Bentley and me and told us this story.

A long time ago a lady called Mary rode a donkey into a place called Bethlehem to give birth to a boy called Jesus. When Jesus grew older he was very special but he must have done something to upset people. They wanted to hurt him so they built a wooden cross which he had to carry up a big hill. A donkey tried to help Jesus but the people stopped him.

The people put Jesus on the cross and went away leaving the donkey still standing there. The donkey went up to Jesus to comfort him and stood behind the cross as the sun went down. A shadow from the cross fell across the donkey’s back. As a thank you to the donkey from God, who was the dad of Jesus, donkeys are now born with this shadow marking.

Isn’t that a very special story. I like this story. It means that donkeys are special.

Angela, Bentley and me talked a lot about Mary who was the mum of Jesus. She must have been a very special mum.

A few days later Mary came to see us. Yes, this is true. Mary in mum’s story had come to visit us.

Mary walked very slowly behind this seat thing with wheels. Mum said she was 94 years old. We were so excited.

We waited by the gate to welcome her.
All of us wanted her to touch us.

Angela tried to reach up and kiss her.
Mum guided Mary through the gate to sit with us. We gathered around her.
Mary touched me.

I told Mary how much I loved her.
Bentley had a chat with Mary.
Bentley and me both talked to Mary.

Bentley has a real kindness for old people.

Mary touched Bentley's head.
Mary touched my head.
I asked Mary if she would join us in the pond paddock.

Bentley and Angela also asked Mary to join us in the pond paddock.
The girls also wanted to meet Mary.
We raced ahead thinking Mary would follow us but she was very slow so we went back to help her.

Bentley stood still so Mary could steady herself against him.
We told Mary that we would guide her towards the pond paddock.
Mary followed us into the pond paddock.

Bentley walked alongside Mary to make sure she was OK.
We felt very special to be with Mary. Each one of us thanked Mary for coming to see us.
Once we knew Mary was safe in the pond paddock we headed off to one of our other paddocks.

Freckles joined Mary to keep her company after we had gone into the next paddock.
Freckles took Mary for a walk.
It was time for Mary to leave us but before she went she came and said goodbye.

We have been blessed to have spent time with Mary.
